Toni’s Cakes

Electric Bass Cake

This was the one Toni made for my birthday celebration at work.  A sensationally moist and dense chocolate cake, split in the middle with berries and butter cream.

On the top, she’s modelled my bass, an Ibanez Soundgear SR1000.  It’s pretty darn accurate.  (Click for larger picture).

Learning from this cake Toni knows she needs a better knife (scalpel?) to cut through fondant as the notes got a bit ragged.   But it was well received, and as tradition dictates it was consumed with a shot of The Glenlivet.

Eating the Farm Cake

This cake was delicious!

However where there was lush pasture, now there remained only a foil covered board…

… and a wall of coconut cake.

Suddenly there was little left...

Wall o' cake

It seemed insurmountable.

Farm cake

This one is technically my 2010 birthday cake.  Technically because it is scheduled to be consumed on my birthday, but my proper birthday cake I’ll be taking to work on Monday (we do “whisky and cake” at work for birthdays).

Toni used the excuse to “practise” making a kids’ cake with farm animals.  They look amazing, down to the texture on the sheep’s coat.

The grass was inspired from a magazine article in Cake Craft & Decoration.  Looking forward to eating this tomorrow.  It’s a “coconut cake” on the inside, just like the undersea cake.

Sorry, the cow is hiding.

Undersea Cake

This cake was for Uncle Jamie who loves scuba diving off the Wellington coast. In return for dropping us off the odd crayfish and generally being a good bloke, Toni makes him birthday cake(s). Here’s the 2010 model.

It’s an undersea theme – with dive tanks, mask, rocks and seaweed (but not real seaweed as that would be wrong).  The colours are dabbed onto the icing with a dry sponge.  The rocks added a bit of colour and grounded the seaweed nicely.
